THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT

Coming over to the Northern Beaches from England 15 years ago, Carrie Brock’s photography has reached new heights with our sandy shores as inspiration.

CARRIE’S seascapes and beach scenes offer an intimate look at our beautiful and bountiful beaches through her stunning photographic works. Armed with her Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, with a 24-70mm or 16-35mm lens, Carrie has been able to capture a plethora of incredible photographs, putting the vibrant palettes that exist within the Australian beach on display - especially those captured at the crack of dawn. “My process involves an obsession with weather forecasts,” said Carrie. “If there’s a chance of a stunning sunrise, I want to be at the beach in time to capture the best colours.”

Before reaching her current level of photographic prowess, Carrie was never far from a camera, beginning as a hobbyist. “I’ve been taking photos since my early twenties, when I got my first SLR. My camera, now a DSLR, is my constant travel companion and together we’ve seen some amazing sights,” said Carrie. “But I only began understanding the technical side when I took a digital photography course.” Despite the successes of her photographic endeavours, Carrie remains humble about her craft. “There’s always more to learn, and I enjoy being inspired and encouraged by other photographers.”

Since arriving in Australia all those years ago, Carrie has always admired our beaches.

“When I moved to Sydney, I was a keen scuba diver and spent much time underwater,” said Carrie. “The ocean feels like home, and I hope my photography inspires others to treasure and respect the natural world.”

This admiration is apparent in her work to this very day. The scenes captured by Carrie exhibit the sheer beauty of our Aussie beaches in all their glory. From huge crashing waves beneath imposing cloudbanks to sparkling rockpools and reflective sandy shores. A harmony of warm and cool hues that can only be witnessed on a beach at dawn. Oceans are often empty, but occasionally feature the odd seabird, whale or fellow early morning beach-goer. “I’m always happy when surfers wander into the shot!”

When she’s not practising law or hanging out with her dogs, Carrie is likely to be found with her handy DSLR on a local beach, most often Dee Why Beach, which she loves for the “variety and contrast between surf, beach and rockpools.” A shot from Dee Why may be her favourite of her artworks. “I’m most proud of my work ‘Dee Why Summer Surfer,’ which was the first image I sold through NBG,” said Carrie on the snap, which sees a lone surfer beginning to venture out into the ocean, silhouetted by dawn’s early light. “I was thrilled that someone loved it enough to bid in the auction and even more so as part of the proceeds went to charity.” The soft colours and clever composition of the photograph almost beckon you to join the surfer as they paddle towards the horizon in hopes of catching some gnarly barrels.

This summer Carrie is excited to take her camera out to discover even more of Australia, starting with the NSW coastline, and then perhaps beyond. “In terms of my creative journey, I’m keen to try astro photography, so you may be seeing stars!”
